Latest news: (scroll down for latest advice)
28th February 2009 - A very quiet start to the year, we are not alone though; Rome generally has seen a decline in visitors of over 20%. It's still a wonderful place to visit, and with care it need not cost more than previous years. 6th January 2009 - Here's wishing everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.
25 November 2008 - It's surprising how
quickly this year has
passed, and as we look back at the year, we think of all the lovely
people we have had to stay. 2009 could be a more difficult year for us,
with the economic downturn; but we look forward to offering our
hospitality to any that do need a break away from the hussle and bustle
of life 5 August 2008 - It is amazing how quickly time flies. Over halfway through 2008, it has been a successful year. We have had some wonderful people to stay, and we have enjoyed sharing experiences with our guests. Palestrina has just been twinned with Bievres in France, and we had the pleasure of the French staying with us. The celebrations for the twinning lasted all weekend and there is a good gallery at the Palestrina site http://www.comune.palestrina.rm.it/immagini/Gemellaggio2008/album/ 3 June 2008 - We are looking at offering self catering apartments as well as bed and breakfast (still on the outskirts of Rome). If you would be interested just drop me a mail. Latest Advice: As we have moved out of the crazy season, the lines for the Vatican are dying down, although there is no guarantee that there will be none. It is still better, especially if you don't have a tour booked, to go after 13:00. The Pantheon opening hours are: Mon-Sat 0830-1930, Sun 0900-1800; public holidays 0900-1300 Papal Audiences - When the pope is in Rome, he gives a public audience every Wednesday beginning at 10:30am (sometimes at 10am in summer). It takes place in the Paul VI Hall of Audiences, although sometimes St. Peter's Basilica and St. Peter's Square are used to accommodate a large attendance. Anyone is welcome, but you must first obtain a free ticket from the office of the Prefecture of the Papal Household, accessible from St. Peter's Square by the Bronze Door, where the colonnade on the right (as you face the basilica) begins. The office is open from Monday through Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Tickets are readily available on Monday and Tuesday; sometimes you won't be able to get into the office on Wednesday morning. Occasionally, if there's enough room, you can attend without a ticket. You can also write ahead to the Prefecture of the Papal Household, 00120 Cittą del Vaticano (tel. 06-69883114; fax 06-69885863), indicating your language, the dates of your visit, the number of people in your party, and (if possible) the hotel in Rome to which the cards should be sent the afternoon before the audience. At noon on Sunday, the pope speaks briefly from his study window and gives his blessing to the visitors and pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square. From about mid-July to mid-September, the Angelus and blessing take place at the summer residence at Castelgandolfo, some 26km (16 miles) out of Rome and accessible by Metro and bus. Look at out trips and tours page Take a look at our Advice archive Peace and Tranquillity - use Anne's Place as the accommodation and your base for exploring central Italy, including Rome (30 minutes by train), or simply walking. Relax with us, return after a day in Rome to a comfortable house, watch a movie from our library, listen to music or watch satellite TV. You could read a book on the terrace, with a glass of local wine. Take yourself to one of the wonderful local restaurants that will welcome you. The surroundings of Rome are wonderful, so much to see, so much history that predates Rome itself. All too often, booking accommodation in Italy can be difficult. Places require a deposit, and want your credit card faxed to them, or insist on a personal check, or ask you to use an antiquated system of transferring money into the Italian Post Office. Not so with Anne's Place, we aren't interested in your mother's maiden name, or your social security number, not even the name of your favourite dog (or what colour it is). We trust people to notify us if they decide, for any reason, to cancel, in good time. Yes, it has failed us a couple of times, but the vast majority of you are honest, and will return the trust we have in you. Anne's Place has finally taken delivery of a minibus, and Anne's taken to it like a duck to water. Now we can collect you from the airports, from the seaport, from the railway station, from the restaurants, all in the comfort of a spacious minibus. Secure Parking Trips and conducted tours arrangedAll-in packages arranged Groups catered forCall or email for further details Is 30 minutes outside of Rome too far ? Will I miss the night life in Rome? The answer to the 1st question is not at all. Many of the hotels on the outskirts of Rome itself will take longer to get into the centre. If you are even at the end of the Metro, it will take longer. Will I miss the night life - that's possible, if you are a night life person. But being away from the city, the noise, the pollution, the crime has its advantages. The countryside is beautiful, the restaurants wonderful, the costs are far less. And, believe it or not, there is life outside of the city of Rome. Can I get to the local station by foot ? Unfortunately not, it is about a 10 minute drive from the house, but we are there for you....... The bar at the station will call us, and we'll pick you up and take you home. If you have an early flight - don't fret - we'll take you to the airport (whatever the time) although we do charge for this service.
