Roma, non basta una vita

When you’re in Rome one lifetime is not enough

See Naples and die, but live more than one lifetime in the Eternal City. It has everything to offer, and more. Benefit from Rome's hospitality, an hospitality that has existed for centuries. Was it not the apostle Paul, on his travels, that wrote fondly of the people and their love ?

This may not be the same Rome that Paul wrote to, there was no noisy traffic, hooters blaring, the motorinos screaming, but undoubtedly there were the Romans on the streets selling their wares to the visitors. There were the eating places providing the weary traveller with sufficient sustenance. People in those days flocked to Rome, just as they do today. It was a city then where all the attractions were within walking distance, you couldn't hop on the Metro, or take a bus.

Yes, Paul had some lessons to teach the Romans, but enough of that one hears you say. Why isn't one lifetime enough for Rome. What did Silvio Negro, who penned these words, have in mind ?

It is a small city, compared with London or New York, and both London and New York have been described as cities you could never tire of. Nor could one describe Rome as cosmopolitan, as one oft hears of these two cities. There is no glitz in Rome, in fact it has a shabby elegance about it. But who needs glitz when you have so much history. You cannot walk the streets on New York wondering what happened on this corner 2000 years ago. Or share the splendour of the Coliseum, thinking of the gladiators of old.

I have been here a mere 6 years, but in comparison to previous places I have laid my head, I confess to a contentment never achieved elsewhere. The elsewhere's have included the middle east, the Americas and 4 counties in Europe (if the UK can be described as being part of Europe). Big cities, I've done them all, Tripoli, Benghazi, Riyadh, London, Newcastle, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, Brussels, Frankfurt and Munich, to name a few.  With exception of Frankfurt, I enjoyed them all, in different ways. As someone with a lifetime of itchy feet, I have at last found my final resting place, in this or the next lifetime.

What has the Eternal City done that makes me so content. Simply being there. As it has been for the past centuries.
