A Walking Holiday

from Anne's Place

It has only been these last days that we have rediscovered the beauty of the mountains around us. Just a short distance from Anne's Place are the wonderful towns of Castel San Pietro, Caprenica and Guadagnolo. The walks are fantastic. The views spectacular. Tuscany has nothing to compare with this.

Walking Holidays in Italy.

The opportunities to walk in the mountains in Italy are manifold, most head for the Gran Sasso range or one of the many national parks. But one still undiscovered area by visitors are the mountain area of the Prenestini and Cerella. Here you will find wonderful villages such as Guadagnolo, Rocca di Cave, Capranica Prenestrina and Castel San Pietro. Horses and cattle graze unconcerned by the few hikers or cars that pass by. You will not find well marked paths, but each corner you take will bring another surprise. You'll come across a farm, or a santuary, at the end of a small road. The food is excellent, unless you happen to be vegetarian, when you will not fare so well.

There is a tale about the oxen, that the Romans like to tell. Mussolini decided to ban them (no one can tell me why), but one farmer in the hills secreted away a breeding pair, and now they are once again prolific in the hills and mountains around Rome
